An Energizing Move – A Change Is As Good As A Holiday
Moving house is never easy, but I have to say that my move was just about as good as it gets, and yes, it was energizing in many ways. Why?
Because I had wonderful help from my friends – in helping me pack boxes, move my gear to the new place, clean my previous home, and even unpack once I had moved. What had I done to deserve all this wonderful help?
I was worried – just a little because I don’t worry much about anything these days – about the thought of carrying heavy boxes up stairs, but my prayers were answered with some strong men (and women) who happily helped me.
After a few days of to-ing and fro-ing, packing, cleaning, carrying, walking up stairs my poor body was aching. Each night I fell into bed wondering whether I could do the same again the next day, but each morning my aches had almost gone away and I was able to arise feeling fresh.
The removalists were efficient and cheerful too, and nothing was damaged in the move. Sue, my housemate, shared everything with me, and that made it easier also.
Now I am settled into my new home – the beautiful ‘Castles in the Sky’ – light and airy, spacious with a view and surrounded by easy care garden.
I am truly blessed – and yes, you guessed it – energized by being here. I am living in the moment with much to look forward to.
Already I have had visitors and clients come to share my home. I am feeling very lucky.

Only five more sleeps until we leave for Hawaii, and I am as excited as a child looking forward to Christmas. I am beginning to anticipate what might be, because of some synchronicities that have occurred this week.
I say ‘anticipate’ rather than ‘expect’ because expectations can lead to disappointment, and I want to be open to whatever is offered to me on this brand new holiday. Anticipation is energizing, because it is like ‘creating possibilities’ that may occur.
Another Joan – and a Surprise
On Wednesday I went to Yoga with my friend Bev – a fantastic Yoga teacher, and I always feel energized by it. Afterwards we have coffee and talk about all manner of things. This time it was about Hawaii, and she told me of Joan Ocean, ‘The dolphin lady of Hawaii’ who lives on the big island where we are spending most of our time, and how you can swim with the dolphins there. Bev said she would lend me Joan’s book to read.
When I came home, I looked up Joan Ocean on the Internet. What I discovered first, was not all about dolphins. It was instead about the Sasquatch – America’s Big Foot, and her encounters.
You could have knocked me down with a feather. I had just finished writing Maggie’s and my book about Australia’s ‘bigfoot’, the Gooligah, and here I was, reading what this other Joan has written about the Sasquatch!!
When I went to the main part of her website, which was about the dolphins, I found she is conducting two dolphin and whale seminars at the exact time we will be in Hawaii. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend, but the wonderful dolphin energy will be all around, and I will put it out there that I can swim with dolphins somehow.
I have written to Joan Ocean, and hope to receive a reply from her before I go.
The Book – The Day of the Gooligah
It’s been an exciting week. My friend Maggie Meyer, with whom I am collaberating to write this book, came to visit on Wednesday to have a celebratory meeting on finishing writing ‘The Day of the Gooligah’. She brought me gifts – beautiful coffee mugs and a plate with the Blue Wren and Fairy Wren on them. (I love pretty coffee mugs and plates). She didn’t know that the town where I was born – Bridgetown in Western Australia) has the Blue Wren as its bird emblem. More Synchronicity!
Then yesterday, I received word that The Day of the Gooligah had been shortlisted in the competition we’d entered with Morris Publishing, and so is one of eleven books on the shortlist from which five will be selected to be published. Maggie and I are over the moon.
What an energizing week it has been, and I anticipate more to come.

I woke up this morning with happy toes! Some of you will know I went for a cropper last week, and at the time I thought my knees were the worst problem, but when that pain subsided I realised it was my toes causing the most pain – the two smallest toes on my right foot.
( Enter your details at the right to join my list —-> )
You would think toes didn’t matter that much, especially the little ones, but it is surprising how pain and injury in these small bodily parts can be limiting.
This morning I awoke without toe pain – Happy Toes meant a happy and energized me.
Louise Hay, my wellness guru, says in ‘You Can Heal Your Life’ toes represent the minor details of the future. Her affirmation is ‘All details take care of themselves’.
Had I been worrying about the minor details of my Hawaii trip? Certainly, the past week has been one of re-scheduling because of the collapse of Air Australia, and we have only just received our new flight details, so at last I can truly relax and get excited about the holiday. We are now travelling on Hawaiian Airlines, which means we are going ‘The Hawaiian Way’ – and the bonus is we get an extra night in Honolulu paid for by the travel agent.
So my toes can heal now – the details of the future are taken care of. With happy toes I will be able to learn to dance the hula. What can be more energizing than that?
Band Aids and a Kiss
On a physical level I did very little to help heal my toes. I wrapped them in bandaids.
How comforting the good old bandaid is! It reminds me of my childhood, and also reminds me of when I lovingly applied bandaids to my children’s minor injuries.
People talk about ‘the bandaid treatment’ but let’s not knock it. It works! Just as the ‘kiss it better’ treatment works for small children. There is something magical about this. Is it because the child believes it will get better that the bandaid and the kiss take away the pain?
What We Believe Becomes Real – The Energizing (or de-energizing) Power of Belief
Last night I watched a movie called ‘The Invention of Lying’, with Ricky Gervais, about a town where nobody lied about anything. Then the lead character, Mark Bellison, discovered he could lie.
Of course I am not advocating lying, but what this movie illustrates is the power of the mind and belief. When we are told something with enough autority we will believe it.
Doctors have a tremendous amount of authority and respect, and many people believe what they say. This can be a recovery or cure, but is more often a ‘sentence’ to lifelong dis-ease and dosing up on more and more drugs.
How Does Belief Help Healing and Energy?
Most of us believe that the external body heals itself. We see new skin grow where grazes have turned to scabs: we even take it for granted that broken bones, once set in place, will knit together without medication. Hence it was natural and normal for me to believe that my little toes would recover over time.
Time is a Great Healer
We often use the saying, ‘Time is a great healer’. So how come many of us don’t believe that the internal organs will heal over time?
Don’t we know that the best thing we can do for the body is build up the immune system and then ‘get out of the body’s way’ so it can do what it is designed to do – heal itself.
This means not focussing on the illness. Like Makia, in the Hawaiian Way says: ‘Energy flows where attention goes’, and ‘ focus on what you do want, not on what you don’t want.’
Natural and Normal
On Dr Oz this week he was talking about how to reduce bad cholesterol. He has some great blog posts on the subject of using natural means to change cholesterol levels.
Me, I don’t buy into all the attention to the numbers relating to cholesterol – to me it is focussing on what I don’t want. But I have to admit Dr Oz’s diagramatic explanation of how cholesterol is made and what its purpose is was very interesting. With the focus on cholesterol we get the idea it is all bad, but in fact it is a natural, normal and necessary building block for our cells.
Give it No Thought
Staying healthy is easy – just as ‘Life is meant to be easy’ – and energizing. All we have to do is follow some simple basic principles and then get out of our own way so that the automatic healing system that comes naturally to our bodies and minds can work.
I’ve mentioned my friend Richard Grant before, with his book ‘Give it No Thought’. If you can give no thought to illness and focus on wellness – ease rather than dis-ease – you will find you are happier, healthier and more energized every day.
So this week I am looking forward to ‘all the details taking care of themselves’, having an energizing time as my toes get happier, and focussing on all the exciting energizing things coming up.
I hope you can do the same.
Sickness Or Health All around me every day
The world is sick. These people say
‘I’ve got the flu, my knees are sore,
My heart is weak. I’m feeling poor.
‘Unknown syndromes, doctors named them.
On the health scheme, pills, I’ve claimed them.
Two I’m taking when I rise,
Another two, the docs advise,
And ere I sleep there’s three or four.
I cannot guess how many more.
‘I wake up feeling good and bright,
Then take my pills. Oh what a fright.
I fall asleep, I’m feeling sick.
Is this the cure? I need help quick’.
These medications make no sense.
Try good nutrition, good thoughts. Hence
The cure’s within me, body, mind.
True ‘wellness’ every day I’ll find.

When I arrived home yesterday I found my lovely friend Franki mowing my lawn. She has offered to do it for me to save me money until I go to Hawaii, as I had been paying to have my garden maintained. I don’t have a lawn mower, and she is very good at it, and quick too. What an amazing gift.
Franki has been reading the book ‘Pay it Forward’. I saw the movie and found it so inspirational that I wrote about it in my books. Even the movie trailer is inspirational and energizing Watch it Here
Pay it Forward is something I like to live by, but every now and then I have to be reminded of how it works.
To Hawaii – or Not?
One reminder recently was to do with the Hawaiian trip I am going on in March. I say ‘going on’ very positively because it has been challenging. You see we were caught up in the Air Australia demise, where the Airline suddenly announced on Friday morning that it was no longer flying anyone anywhere.
Our group was booked on Air Australia. Suddenly we were without a means to get to Hawaii.
The barbecue that was planned for yesterday to get to know each other and handover travel wallets etc, turned into a strategy planning meeting. However, we still managed to enjoy the ambience of the lovely tropical garden and the beautiful Gold Coast weather. Our energy picked up and we separated on a positive note.
A lot of activity took place over a couple of days, and the trip is still going ahead.
‘Pay it Forward’ clicked in.
Qantas airlines offered a low airfare to Air Australia passengers. I was one of the ‘lucky’ ones, with a long term good friend, also going on the trip, offering to pay the extra money needed to obtain this new airfare. What a generous gesture! I will do my best to pay her back in time, one way or another – but perhaps I am meant to ‘Pay it Forward’ too.
I could easily have refused her offer, and Franki’s lawn mowing, but I chose instead to be grateful and accepting. They both enjoy sharing and giving to others, and I believe in the power and energy of ‘receiving’ as much as the energy of ‘giving’.
I also believe that I have ‘paid it forward’ by giving freely of my time and energy to help others – most recently in helping Dean Callaway get his book ‘The Hawaiian Way’ into print with extras to help him promote it, because I support his message. Dean is also paying it forward with the time and energy he has put in to making the trip the best he can and the extra things he does for people all the time.
Balance – Exchange of Energy
The world is built on balance, and the balance of ‘exchange of energy’ is an important concept. This doesn’t mean we have to exchange it with the same people. It simply means we put out in big doses and it comes back in big doses – if we are able to receive it.
People who receive too much and never give are out of balance, but so also are people who give too much and cannot receive.
Is Your Energy Balanced? Check your ‘ometers’
Check your receive-ometer against your give-ometer, and see if you are allowing yourself to receive.
An Energy Block – What Did it Mean?
With Dean’s Hawaiian trip, we had a good feeling about how everything would go smoothly and it would be an amazing experience for all ten of us, and then suddenly there was a ‘spanner in the works’ with the Air Australia collapse. This got us thinking? What’s going on here? Why this sudden block in our path?
In a former job I had, one person said to me, ‘We never promised you a bed of roses’. Well, I guess we could say this about life. Even though I believe ‘Life was meant to be easy’, I also know we are going to be tested from time to time – tested on our focus, determination, and maybe on the ‘7 Principles of the Hawaiian Way’ also – Ike -Awareness, Kala -No Limits , Makia – Focus, Manawa – Living in the Now, Aloha -Love, Mana – All power comes from within, and Pono – Effectiveness is the measure of truth.
Perhaps this was what was happening – it was just a test to see which of us was applying all the principles and who could move through the blockage and make it go right.
Everything is coming right, and I will give you an update when I find out how many are still going on the trip.
GIVING AND RECEIVING
They say it’s more blessed to give than receive.
But that’s how they see it, how they perceive.
For giving is one thing that’s easy to do.
It makes me feel good when I’m giving to you.
But better than this is receiving a gift.
By thanking the giver, I give you a lift.
When gratitude shows for the thing you have done,
You’re rewarded because you’re the most special one.
By giving I show that I selflessly live. When receiving I bless you,
Not just when I give.

Let me have your comments, and tell me about any incidents you have had of ‘Paying it Forward’.
The Tummy Tuck System – Energize Your Body Naturally
In my last post (yesterday) I talked about the ‘Interim’ – the period over the holidays, and how it has enabled me to re-focus and get started back into life with New Energy. But relaxing for this amount of time had a downside.
Letting the Body Go
The biggest shock for me was to discover the way I had let my body go. However my latest activity, my Yoga Class, has led me to an energizing breakthrough, and I am excited to share it with you.
The Breakthrough – Yoga and Lightbulb Moments
My friend Bev conducts the Yoga Class and she is an excellent teacher. Afterwards we have coffee and a chat, and last week I mentioned to her how disgusted I was to see a photo which showed my very fat tummy. Her casual response was, ‘You know, a flat stomach is the natural state for the body’.
This was Lightbulb Moment #1
It hit me like a ton of bricks. ‘What a great affirmation’, I thought. A flat stomach is the natural state for the body.
What I had been doing was looking at myself in the mirror and and in photographs and telling myself how much I didn’t like my fat tummy. I was doing this despite the fact that I know about ‘what you focus on you create’, and my thoughtw were simply exacerbating the problem.
It was time to change my focus.
Lightbulb Moment #2 occurred when I thought about what I had been doing. For about 2 years I have been focussing on breathing into my stomach to fill my lungs with air, and then pushing the air out by pulling my stomach in. This has helped me to relax and be more calm, and it has kept my body healthy. However, I have been focussed on the wrong part of the cycle – the in breath.
My realisation was that I must focus on the out breath – tighten those tummy muscles and push all the CO2 out. Only when all the air has been pushed out can I then take a deep breath in (letting the stomach out) to fill up my lungs with fresh new air and oxygen. The outbreath is much longer than the inbreath. This means that the tummy muscles are being contracted for much longer than they are being relaxed.
Lightbulb Moment #3 was the understanding that toxins are being released from the body with the outbreath, and this also aids health and helps to decrease the swelling in the belly. (My Meditation guru – Chris Dorje Walker – and Bev were both saying the same thing.)
Left: Before - 12th Jan 2012 Right: Feb 4th 2012 After 10 days of tummy tuck breathing
Look at the photos at right to see the result in just one week of practising this new breathing technique – tightening my stomach muscles with the outbreath. I am amazed. My clothes are looser around the waist and stomach area, and I am standing and sitting taller and straighter.
Why don’t you try it too?
I told one of my friends about this, and she said, ‘I wonder what I have been telling my body? She picked up on the affirmation part of it and is changing her thoughts.
I am looking for people to give it a try, because I am keen to see if it will work for others as well as it works for me.
It is not easy to do, because it is essential that you maintain a relaxed state in your shoulders and arms (so that the body is not getting the message to send adrenalin through the systems), and all you are contracting is your stomach. It takes practice, but is worth the effort.
This is what you do:
Say the affirmation A flat stomach is the natural state for the body as often as you remember. I have also added The body’s natural state is at ease, healthy and toned.
Drop your shoulders down and relax your shoulders and arms
Contract your stomach muscles as you breathe out, pushing all the air out of your lungs until you feel there is none left (eliminate what the body doesn’t need to create a vacuum)
Then allow your stomach to relax and the incoming breath to fill up your stomach and lungs. This should take less time than the outward breath and should feel wonderful – all that beautiful fresh air expanding your lungs.
As you again push the air out by contracting your stomach, imagine the toxins leaving your system.
Get into the habit of breathing this way all the time – practice while driving the car, sitting in front of TV, at your computer etc.
You will find that you are energizing your body by allowing the waste to be expelled and the life-giving breath to fill your lungs.
You automatically sit and stand straighter and taller.
If you are like me, you will find that your cravings for food are reduced. You are receiving the energy from the oxygenated air, and by contracting your stomach you are giving it the signal that it doesn’t need that ‘full feeling’.
I would love to hear about your experience with the Natural Tummy Tuck system.

Do you have the same thing I do – difficulty in getting back into the swing of things after the holiday period? I am ashamed to realise that this is the last day of January, and I haven’t written a post since New Year.
I tell a lie – I don’t do shame! But it amazes me that it has taken this long to get writing to you again and I have had to push through blockages to get here.
It’s not that I haven’t done anything at all – I have just done ‘everything else’ but write my posts, and contact all my wonderful friends that have taken the trouble to join my list. (If you haven’t already – do put your name and email at the right ——-> to join. As you will realise, I won’t bombard you with a lot of extra emails.)
Me with my son and his three beautiful daughters
What have I been doing in the ‘Interim’?
I love that word ‘interim’ – a good sounding word that means exactly what I want it to: an intervening time, an interval. So, I have just been having an ‘interval’ like the lull in the middle of a grand performance. In the interval the actors prepare for the next Act. The audience refreshes themselves with food and drink, and many visit the bathroom – eliminating waste is important too. Perhaps this is what the Interim is all about.
During that intervening time for me, I actually achieved quite a lot. I did the relaxing and refreshing, and also eliminated a lot of clutter from my garage, my office and my mind. I prepared myself of the next Act of my life.
Here’s My Interim List (being a Virgo I love lists!):
Caught up with family when they visited the Gold Coast – An energizing time in the rainforest and at the beach
Re-focussed and wrote more of my Young Adults fantasy fiction adventure novel, and entering a competition with it – broke through some more blockages and gained the energy to do it.
Compiled ‘A Kaleidoscope of Aussie Poetry’ Ebook for my Poetry in Paradise group. Creating a product is always energizing. Download it free Here
Started Yoga Class – a new activity. More about that in my next post. A great body cleanse.
Mulled over my next book about feeling young while growing older – can’t wait to start writing it. Watch this space – lots of amazing things I’ve learned about feeling young.
Not too bad an ‘Interim List’ perhaps. Certainly energizing to look at it and discover what I have been doing while avoiding what I thought I should be doing. (See my poem about Procrastination below.)
What is your ‘Interim List’? What have you been doing while you have been avoiding doing what you think you should be doing?
There’s not many things I hate, but I hate that horrible ‘should’ word. Why? Because ‘should’ implies that someone outside of ourselves is telling us to do it. It’s usually an authority figure, and often in the past – a parent, teacher, well-meaning friend, doctor, etc etc. If someone in the present is telling you what you should be doing, consider letting that person go out of your life.
How many de-energizing ‘shoulds’ do you have?
I should do more exercise
I should take more pills
I should work harder / longer
I should mow the lawn, mop the floors, visit my in-laws
The list is endless.
Just ask yourself, ‘Why Should I? Who says?’ You may find you can reclaim a whole lot of fun time, me time, leisure and pampering time, simply by just letting go of the shoulds.
Don’t forget the most important part that really recharges your energy cells – that is Let Go of the Guilt.
When you let go of any shame or guilt from not doing what you should be doing, you can really live in the Now. That is the very best energizer of all.
Reclaim your energy – enjoy the Interim, send those shoulds and guilts packing and live to enjoy the moment.
I am. And look what’s happened. I have written a new post.
Procrastination I’m fighting still procrastination.
Or is it just prevarication.
To put things off, show hesitation
Leads to loss of motivation.
Even worse, to much frustration,
Production loss, deterioration.
Conversely there’s the implication,
Do it now brings great elation,
Makes things work, facilitation.
Others show appreciation.
Stand and gaze in admiration.
Here is one who leads the nation,
Simply by fast application,
Action now, true dedication.

2012 started off with a bang with fireworks shooting to the sky everywhere. What a symbol of energy that is, although it’s not exactly ‘clean’ energy.
It’s ironic that so much is said about polluting the atmosphere and yet millions of dollars goes up in smoke to herald each New Year – but I won’t go there!!
As the 7th Principle in ‘The Hawaiian Way’ says, ‘There is always a better way of doing things’, and my better way of looking at the fireworks is to marvel at their beauty.
New Year’s Eve Party
On New Years Eve I partied with friends at their unit in Southport where, from the roof of the building, we could see fireworks from Paradise Point to Broadbeach, not to mention the beautiful lights of the Gold Coast. The images from my camera were disappointing though, so when I came home I watched the recording of the Sydney fireworks display and took these photos of the television.
Watch this Beautiful Video Here
The images, music and message are superb, and will certainly energize and uplift you.
A Christmas Party to Energize
At Christmas and New Year there is so much to celebrate, and this in itself is energizing. I was fortunate in celebrating with my son and his beautiful family in Darwin. My daughter-in-law and her Chinese relations have a big family gathering in a hall.
A Cyclone that didn’t happen in Darwin
Cyclone Grant was hovering off the north coast of Australia, and the weather bureau was issuing warnings, but I was confident it was not going to spoil our Christmas, and it didn’t. In fact the weather was so dry that my grandsons and their friends were able to try out their new power wings outside.
What a wonderful loving environment it was, and they were very accepting of me, despite my very Aussie/European background. Most of them have been in Darwin for several generations, so we had traditional Christmas dinner, and I felt quite at home. There was not one disagreement or cross word, and no children cried. The energy, friendship and cameraderie was amazing.
The party started at midday and ended late at night, and during the afternoon while the children played computer games some of the adults played Mahjong.
‘Resolve’ for the New Year
I came home energized and enthused to start the New Year with some resolutions, or what I prefer to call ‘Resolves’.
‘Resolve’ is not a should, or must-do word. It puts the power and decision back to where it belongs, to ‘me, myself and I’.
Resolve, used as a verb, means ‘To make up ones mind, determine, decide.’ Another meaning is ‘to clear up, dispel, or to answer, solve, explain.’ The word is derived from the Latin ‘re’, meaning ‘back’, and ‘solvere’, to ‘loosen’. It has all the elements in it that I am putting forward – loosening up, letting go, having a clear purpose, listening to the inner voice, and determining or deciding what you wish to do, then going ahead and doing it when the time is right.
Cartoon by Robin Small
There is no right and wrong with the word ‘resolve’ because it means that you decide. What I know is that if you resolve to do something it means an intention. ‘Intention is cause’ if put out into the Universe with enough resolve.
Commitment – A Promise to Yourself
The word resolve contains within it an element of commitment. Once you have made up your mind, or ‘resolved’ to do something, you have committed to it. As a noun it means ‘firmness in carrying out a purpose, determination.’
Jim Rohn once asked some children for a definition of the word resolve. His favourite one was, ‘A promise to myself that I will never give up.’
I offer the word ‘resolve’ as a gift to you and invite you to use it as often as you wish, especially as we go into the New Year.
What promise will you make to yourself that you will never give up on?
I have already started on my promises to myself. Tomorrow I will submit ‘The Hawaiian Way – Live the Principles’ by Dean Callaway for printing. I am proud of the fact that I have captured Dean’s words and workshops into print, and this will be an amazing book to change lives.
Dean’s book will be available at the Broadbeach , Gold Coast Qld Health, Harmony & Soul Expo from 20th January 2012. Put it in your diaries now if you live in SE Queensland.
I also have two new books I am writing for myself, so watch this space.
New Year’s Resolve
A New Year’s beginning to make resolutions. For all of your problems come up with solutions. But do you resolve to really take action? Get focussed on change, put away all distractions? The simple solution is always the best. So give it a go, and put it to test. (c) Joan Small

Music and Dance Show Judges, Validation and Energy
Have you noticed that on the music and dance reality shows the judges have changed their attitude? Is it my imagination, or are they more about validation these days than ‘invalidation’, which means to weaken, impair; disprove, refute, rebut – cause to be worthless, not good?
There used to always be the ‘Hanging Judge’ – the nasty one who specialised in invalidation, gave out the put downs and cutting comments that ripped the performers to shreds. Red Simons on the Australian show ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday’ was a classic, and the tradition was carried on in Australia by Ian Dickenson – known as ‘Dicko’, and Kyle Sanderlands. But these ‘invalidator’ judges seem to have become kinder. Even Kyle watered down his harsh comments in the latest round of X Factor.
See the transformation in Simon’s face as Susan Boyle opens her mouth and sings.
How many times in your life have you been made to feel worthless or of no account?
How many times have you been disapproved of, or disproved, refuted or rebutted and so weakened.
Choose Validation to Empower and Energize
If you choose ‘validation’ you will see that it will strengthen by approving. This is what I see happening now in shows such as ‘So You Think You Can Dance’
Watch Lady Gaga below. You may find her costume and her tears a bit over the top, but just look at how her response to Melanie’s dancing makes the young dancer’s face shine. Even Mary Murphy with her outrageous screaming makes the dancers glow, and Nigel has become less critical, relying more on sandwiching points for improvement (rather than put-downs) between his compliments.
It seems the world of reality performance shows is changing, and because of the increase in the best kind of validation the stars are becoming more energized and performing amazing artistic feats that take the breath away.
Validation is truly empowering. Susan Energizes the World With her Love and Spirit
Susan Boyle has taken the world by storm, and brought it together in a loving way more than any person since Princess Diana.
Susan refused to be put down and invalidated. Instead she let her light and her energy shine.
We can all do the same this Christmas and into 2012. Let go of the invalidation, don’t take it on board, but rather validate and honour others for the person they are inside.

In order to be energized every day and to have confidence and self assurance you need to have some inkling about who you are. A lady I know recently revealed that she had left her seemingly happy marriage because she didn’t know who she was.
This is an uncomfortable position to be in because it means you are buffeted by the stream – always pushed this way or that because of others’ opinions.
To give you a small example of being influenced by others …
My various hairstyles
I have always coloured my hair, and worn it in different styles, short, mid length or long, and when it is long I sometimes tie it up. My friends and others often comment on which style they prefer. Some will say, ‘I like your hair short’, others like it darker or fairer, and some prefer it long or tied back.
At times I have styled me hair to suit the person whose favourable opinion I most want at that time. However, I have now come to realise that it is impossible and downright silly to change my hair style because of what others say. I should be choosing for me – what I think suits me best, and varying the way I wear my hair depending on who I am and how I feel.
Can you see how this translates into larger things?
If we allow ourselves to put our own instincts and preferences after everybody elses; if we are always trying to please others and be how they want us to be we just lose ourselves. We end up not knowing who we really are.
Perhaps you have experienced times in your life when you felt you were not really yourself. This is what happened to me.
A Young Wife and Mother
Young Wife and Mother
When children come along they bring out the best, and sometimes the worst, in us. I had grown up around a dominant father who was bossy, irritable and sometimes angry. My mother was the opposite, gentle, easily upset and sympathetic. So when I had my own children stressful situations caused me sometimes to become irritable and angry, and at other times to dissolve into tears.
I am happy to say that most of the time I was even tempered, patient and loving. However, when these moods came upon me I felt that I was ‘not myself’. I had turned into someone else, and I didn’t understand what was happening and making me behave this way.
Awareness Allows Change
In one of my sortees into personal development I discovered that these mood shifts are because of taking on the personality of another person. In my case my mother or father. Once I became aware of this I could ‘catch myself out’ when I was going into these valances that were not the real me. As I took measures to handle stress in different and more positive ways, I became more of myself and a much easier person to live with.
Can you relate to this?
I have done a lot of personal development work over the years, and it has helped me to recognise that the real me is the best person to be. I know and like myself now, and this has helped me to gain the confidence I have in all situations.
It is also wonderfully energizing to know I am my own person and can choose for myself.
I’d love to hear about your experiences with becoming more of the real you.

This powerpoint presentation is well worth a few moments of your time. The suggestions are energizing and uplifting, the images absolutely beautiful and the music easy to listen to. Pass it on to others when you have watched and listened to it, and help to make their day or their life.
PS: If you want to ‘vote’ on which look you prefer in the above photos I will be interested in your opinion. (Not that I will allow it to over-ride my own preferences, of course.)

Something to do, something to look forward to and someone to love. This has been so oft quoted it may seem like a well-worn cliche, but variety truly is the spice of life, and having something interesting and different to do and look forward to every day is what gets us out of bed.
Who wants to do the same things every day? I know I don’t, so I deliberately create what I call ‘islands of enjoyment’.
These islands may just be small things. For instance, if I have been working at my computer all day I will walk over to the shopping centre where there is an excellent coffee shop, ‘shout’ myself a coffee and sit outside, alfresco on the pavement, watching the world go by and perhaps flicking through the newspaper or reading a book.
The combination of fresh air, exercise, tasty coffee and people-watching has an uplifting effect.
What is your ‘special small thing’ that will lift you out of feeling bored or ordinary?
A Hawaiian Workshop – Aloha
Hills of Kona Hawaii
Dean Calloway’s mini workshop yesterday on the 7 Principles of The Hawaiian Way was about the 5th principle – Aloha.
We started with a social chat in the adjacent coffee lounge (is there a coffee theme going on here?) next to the Crystal shop. What wonderful energy in this amazing shop filled with the most spectacular gemstones.
The session was very special, talking about how Aloha is not only a Hawaiian greeting but also a breathing technique and a way of sharing love and gratitude.
After that, I went on to a house party to celebrate 120 years – two 60th birthdays – of a husband and wife. This party was full of surprises. Starting outside, with a marquee in the yard, we moved upstairs for the meal, and this was followed by performances from singers, poets, guitarists, and even tin whistles. Interspersed was the chance to sing along with the music. I just loved it.
I had no special expectations of the day, but I was ‘looking forward’ to whatever it would bring.
Special occasions such as these are becoming more frequent in my life as I am thinking ahead, and planning islands of enjoyment. During the week I was at my writers’ group, and today is my wonderful poetry club – ‘Poetry in Paradise’. It seems that by ‘putting it out there’ the Universe is responding with even more magical happenings.
Try it. When you wake in the morning ask the question ‘What grand and glorious adventure will I be having today’.
You will have heard the cliche ‘Life is what you make it’, but cliche or not it is true. Create your own islands of enjoyment now, and never be bored again.
